My Favourite Festival
My favourite festival is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm in Sri Lanka. This festival usually falls in April and marks the beginning of the traditional new year for both Sinhalese and Tamil communities. It is a time when families come together to celebrate unity, culture, and tradition. One of the most special moments is the lighting of the hearth at an auspicious time. Traditional foods such as kiribath, kavum, and kokis are prepared and shared among family members. The atmosphere is filled with happiness, laughter, and colorful decorations. People wear new clothes and exchange gifts as a symbol of new beginnings. Another important aspect of this festival is the performance of traditional games. These games, such as tug-of-war and pillow fighting, bring excitement and strengthen relationships. The New Year also encourages people to forget past conflicts and start afresh with kindness. Visiting relatives and elders to seek blessings is a meaningful tradition. The sound of firecrackers and the smell of delicious food create a festive environment. This celebration reflects the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. It also teaches values such as respect, sharing, and togetherness. Overall, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a joyful and meaningful festival that I truly cherish.
